The Matching Problem with LVP Stair Noses

Walk the flooring aisle at any home improvement store and you will find stair noses in light oak, medium walnut, and a handful of gray tones. That selection made sense when most people installed natural hardwood. But today, LVP dominates new installs — and LVP comes in thousands of specific colorways, each with a distinct grain pattern, undertone, and surface texture.

The result is a common frustration: a homeowner carefully selects a specific floor like COREtec Plus Enhanced “Barnwood Oak” or LifeProof “Silverton Oak,” spends time and money on a beautiful installation, and then cannot find a stair nose that matches. The closest option at the store is noticeably off — and on a staircase, the mismatch is at eye level on every trip up and down.

How Color Matching Works at StairMatch

StairMatch does not try to approximate your floor color visually. Instead, we match by product identity: your flooring brand and SKU tells us exactly what decor paper, surface texture, and wear layer specification your floor uses. We then source stair nose material from the same production supply chain.

This approach produces a far more accurate result than any eyeballed color match. Grain scale, emboss depth, and sheen are specified from your product rather than judged by eye, and a sample is still checked against your installed floor before production.

If your floor needs something we don't make in-house, we pass your project to one of our qualified manufacturers who specializes in that type of flooring, and they contact you directly with a quote.

When we cannot find an exact SKU match — usually with older discontinued products — we contact you with an honest assessment and describe any available alternatives. We will never ship something that does not meet our match standard without your explicit approval.

Profiles and Lengths

StairMatch matching stair noses are available in round, square, and flush profiles to suit different installation types and aesthetic preferences. Standard lengths are available, and pieces can be ordered at specific widths to match your stair tread width.

Open-side stairs — stairs where one or both sides are exposed rather than against a wall — require a return end cap: a finished end piece that wraps the exposed side so no raw edge is visible. StairMatch offers left-side returns, right-side returns, and double returns for stairs open on both sides. Specify your open-side configuration when you submit your order.
