About StairMatch
We help you find stair nosing and stair treads that match the vinyl plank floor already on your stairs.
What StairMatch does
Putting new vinyl plank on a staircase usually ends the same way: the floor is down, and the pieces that finish the edge of each step do not match it. Stair nose that does not match the plank looks wrong on every step, and finding the right one from a brand name and a color is harder than it should be.
StairMatch exists to fix that. You tell us the flooring brand, color, and SKU from the box label, plus a few details about your stairs. We check them and help you get a stair nose or stair tread that matches the floor you already own.
Who is behind StairMatch
StairMatch was started by Ryan Clark, founder, in Martinez, California. It began in late 2024, when he bought a condo and decided to replace the flooring with luxury vinyl plank. He wanted the stairs done in the same floor, but he could not find a stair nose from the same brand that matched it exactly.
So he set out to make one himself. He spent three to six months experimenting with home-built machines and forms, and hundreds of vinyl planks ended up in the trash along the way. After researching how the flooring is made, he had a company that specializes in machinery for the vinyl flooring industry build him a custom unit that shapes a plank into a stair nose with the right profile, so the finished piece uses the real floor and matches it.
While tuning that machine for his own stair nosing, he kept researching how other manufacturers do it. He found one that already had the original machine, which is patented, running in its warehouse. After several conversations with them, he had to admit that their process was far better than his own, so he teamed up with them. That manufacturer is now our manufacturing partner, and it makes the stair nose for StairMatch customers.
Ryan launched StairMatch in early 2026 so other people with the same problem would not have to go through that. Today, StairMatch reviews each request and passes it, with the customer’s permission, to our manufacturing partner, who makes the stair nose to match the customer’s flooring.
How it works in practice
StairMatch is a coordination and referral service. We do not make stair nose ourselves. A person at StairMatch reviews each request, and with your permission, we pass the project to our manufacturing partner, who makes the stair nose to match your flooring and contacts you directly with a quote.
You never need to send us flooring, planks, or samples. The manufacturer buys matching flooring itself, which is why we ask for the exact SKU and the store you bought from.
If your project is not a fit for our partner, for example a floor it cannot match, we say so and reply with options instead of leaving you waiting. Our full process is on the How It Works page.
Who we are best for
StairMatch is built for rigid-core vinyl (LVP, SPC, WPC), laminate, and engineered-wood floors bought at Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Floor & Decor. It works best for projects of five or more stairs. Smaller projects are welcome, and they receive a reply with options.
Installers and contractors can use StairMatch too. The For Installers page covers what to send for a job and what to expect back.
The guides on this site
Alongside the request forms, we publish plain-English guides on stair nosing and stair treads: how to measure, how the different profiles work, what each material is good for, how to install, and how to choose between a stair nose and a tread kit. They are written to help you make a sound decision even if you never use our service.
Brand names that appear on this site belong to their owners. StairMatch is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the flooring brands it references.
How StairMatch is paid
StairMatch may receive compensation from manufacturers for referring projects to them, and may earn a commission on some retailer links, which are marked "paid link" wherever they appear. Neither changes which products or links we show.
We may also show advertising on our informational pages. The details are in our Affiliate Disclosure and Privacy Policy.
