Custom Vinyl Stair Treads — Made to Match

Full-coverage stair treads built to your exact dimensions and matched to your LVP flooring SKU.

Choose tread covers when the whole step needs attention

Best fit for tread covers

Use custom treads when the stairs are carpeted, worn, or you want one finished overlay that covers the full walking surface and front edge together.

Switch to stair nose only if

The tread surface is already finished and you only need the front edge solved. In that case, start with custom LVP stair nosing.

What Are Custom Vinyl Stair Treads?

Vinyl stair treads are overlay pieces — they go on top of your existing stair treads (the horizontal surfaces you step on) and transform the look and feel of the staircase without requiring demolition of the existing structure. Unlike individual LVP planks, a stair tread is a single preformed piece that covers the full tread width and depth in one unit, with the nosing profile already built in at the front edge.

The custom part is what sets StairMatch apart. Off-the-shelf vinyl treads come in two or three generic finishes and fixed dimensions — they do not match specific LVP products and they do not accommodate non-standard stair widths. StairMatch builds treads to your order: matched to your flooring SKU, cut to your tread width, and configured with whatever return options your stairs require.

When to Choose Custom Over Off-the-Shelf

Your LVP color is specific

If your floor is a named LVP product — anything from LifeProof "Silverton Oak" to COREtec Plus "Barnwood" — a generic off-the-shelf tread will never match it. Custom treads matched by SKU will.

Your stair width is non-standard

Standard treads are sold in fixed widths. If your stairs are narrower than 36 inches or wider than 48 inches, or if you need a specific width to avoid visible cuts at the wall, custom sizing is the only real option.

Your stairs have open sides

Open-side stairs need return end caps. Off-the-shelf treads typically only come as straight pieces. StairMatch custom treads include return configurations built to match.

You want a seamless look throughout

If the goal is for your stairs to look like a continuation of your floor — same color, same grain, same texture — that requires a true material match, not a best-effort visual approximation.

Matching LVP Material

StairMatch custom vinyl stair treads are built from the same decor film and wear layer formulation as the matching LVP floor product. This is not a color approximation — it is a material match based on your flooring SKU. The grain pattern, surface texture, sheen level, and color depth will be consistent with your installed floor planks.

To request a match, you need your flooring brand name, the color name, and the SKU or model number from the box label. If you no longer have the box, the SKU is usually available on your original purchase receipt or in your retailer's order history.

Open-Side Return Configurations

When one or both ends of a stair tread are exposed (not against a wall), the raw side edge of the tread needs to be finished. A return wraps matching LVP material around the end so the side profile looks complete from any viewing angle.

Left Return

The left side of the tread is open. Viewed from the bottom of the stairs, the left end receives the return cap.

Right Return

The right side of the tread is open. The right end receives the return cap when viewed from the foot of the stairs.

Double Return

Both sides of the tread are exposed. Both ends receive matching return caps. Typical for freestanding or floating staircases.

Frequently Asked Questions

A custom vinyl stair tread is built to your specific measurements and matched to your exact flooring product. Yes. Custom vinyl stair treads from StairMatch are available with a left-side return, right-side return, or double return (open on both sides). The return is a finished end piece made from matching LVP material so no raw edge is visible on open stairs.
